In addition to the conference, DNA23 will be hosting a Workshop Day prior to the conference (September 24, 2017). The workshop day will feature selected speakers from around the United States to highlight education in nanotechnology and the future of research in synthetic biology. We have invited three speakers to participate in the education half of our workshop day and three speakers to present for our synthetic biology half! The Education Workshop is meant to examine novel approaches and best practices in teaching nanotechnology, especially DNA nanotechnology.  In many ways, the ability to program algorithms and structures with nucleic acids provides an extremely useful tool for exploring the novelties and challenges of engineering at the molecular scale.  In addition, though, the use of DNA nanotechnology for teaching provides many opportunities for hands-on or experiential learning, as exemplified by programs such as BIOMOD, iGEM, and others.  The purpose of this workshop is to relay to the community what some education innovators are attempting, and also to encourage the formation of a network of educators who can share ideas and approaches.

The Synthetic Biology Workshop is meant to encourage the ongoing exchanges between the DNA nanotechnology and Synthetic Biology communities.  In both instances, advances have been greatly enabled by the scaling of DNA synthesis, and we are therefore focusing on the opportunities for large scale DNA synthesis and assembly for DNA information storage.  This latter topic is receiving enormous interest from both the academic and corporate communities, and this workshop should be of especial interest to theoreticians who want to begin to lay in a future in which information storage in DNA rivals what is possible with electrons.  The panel discussion will double as a tutorial that will give other perspectives on how programming algorithms and structures in DNA can yield enormous impacts in cells and organisms.
